Smoothies can be a great way to increase your fruit and veg intake. I still prefer to eat fruit or veg in their whole form, but for when time is tight or you want some on-the-go nutrition- smoothies definitely have their place. Consider also tuning in to the time of year and what your body is craving. Often in winter the body is happier with warmer foods- so soup would be a great alternative…whereas when the warmer months are here- a cooling smoothie is perfect.
When concocting a smoothie- always try to include a source of healthy fat and/or protein either in the smoothie itself or alongside it. This helps the body absorb more nutrients and can prevent any blood sugar dips too.
TROPICAL GREEN SMOOTHIE
-2-3 chunks of pineapple
-half stick of celery
-small handful spinach
-100-150ml nut milk/water (add more or less to get desired thickness)
-OPTIONAL: protein powder (e.g hemp or brown rice), small handful of cashew nuts, 2 tsp chia seed, tsp nut butter, slice of avocado
Use a good quality blender to blend all of the ingredients together. Pour and enjoy!
NB: This serves one- so scale up if you’re feeding more or want to keep some for the next day.
